A common thing we see on a daily basis are sun damaged and faded plastic covers on stairlifts. When a stairlift is parked at the bottom of the stairs it is usually in front of a front door where the sun beams through. Unfortunately the plastic covers used aren’t UV protected so this results in a yellowing and discoloration of the plastics over time. This doesn’t have a negative impact on the cover other than purely cosmetic. However it does make the equipment appear older than it probably is and is not pleasing on the eye.

We are delighted to have teamed up with a highly skilled and experienced repair specialist who covers the South West area. He specialises in carrying out invisible repairs to a wide range of surfaces. These include Marble, Granite, Ceramic, Sandstone, Brick and Mortar tinting, Wood, Worktops, Bath chips and damage , Stainless Steel and Plastics! I’ve known Steve from Repit UK for nearly 30 years now and he’s been doing this a long time. It was during a recent catch up that I mentioned to issue of faded plastic covers in passing and he asked for more information.
I gave Steve a selection of sun damaged faded plastic covers off a mixture of different stairlifts such as Acorn stairlift grey faded plastic covers, Brooks stairlift cream faded plastic covers and some Stannah stairlift old off white faded plastic covers. Steve went away to do some research and then called me up about a week later.
Stairlift Faded Plastic Covers
Steve had looked in to the various faded plastic covers I had given him and also the application for each. I explained that they were mainly used indoors and some of them needed to be flexible. This was because those particular covers needed to be flexed in order to remove and refit them on to the stairlifts. The arm moldings that I’d given him stayed fixed in place but they were used for weight bearing when transferring on and off the lift and also whilst operating the stairlift. I saw a mix of different surface finishes and a complicated and previously unanswered problem. Steve saw a challenge.
Specialist Plastic Paint
Steve had found a number of paint finishes that suited our application. The first of these was a hard wearing 2-pack paint system that was UV resistant. This was perfect for the arm moldings and rail end covers etc. He had managed to match the paint perfectly and kept the recipe for future reference. The second was a flexible paint designed to be used on a flexible surface without cracking. This was ideal for the motor covers and seat stem dust covers. Both of these paints were fire retardant and safe to be used on an indoor application.
New Looking Plastic Covers
We gave it a go and I have to say I was immediately impressed. The original covers were originally a light grey but covered in a mix and match of yellows and light browns. This was the result of sun damage on faded plastic covers. Steve had got the paint match spot on and I struggled to tell they had even been done. We fitted the covers to the demo stairlifts in the showroom and it looked like brand new again. That was nearly 8 months ago and they still look fantastic today so we have decided to offer it as another Central Mobility South West Division stairlift service.
Worn Or Damaged Mobility Scooter Covers
“Why stop here?” Steve asked. “Do you have other mobility equipment that could benefit from this service? I can spray anything!” he claimed proudly. Well funnily enough this made me reconsider another venture that I looked in to a while back but shelved because I couldn’t find the right man for the job. However today he was stood right in front of me. I wanted to offer a colour change service for mobility scooters. I thought that it would be fun to be able to have a scooter in whatever colour or design you desired. Originally i was looking into sticker kits etc but these were too complicated due to the vast amount of various scooter models and designs out there.
Using this method we could repaint not only faded plastic covers but also change the colour completely or even add an additional complimenting colour to an existing colour scheme. After all, how many mobility scooters did we see whizzing along the sea front with number plates, aerials and stick on Halford accessories? Why not offer a professional look and touch at an affordable price?
Walking Sticks And Walking Frames Colour Change
It seems that there is a gap in the market for changing the colour of certain items of mobility products. We have had numerous enquiries in the past regarding the equipment for children being recoloured in a more appropriate colour rather than the industry standard metallic red, silver or blue. They wanted pinks, greens, yellows and other uplifting colours. They didn’t want to be stuck with colours that were aimed at the older generation. So we listened and we looked in to it and this story hasn’t finished yet. We will update this post as we go along and keep you all informed.
